Research Line 1: Advanced, Robust Electrodes and Membranes
Successful electrochemical conversion of molecules for long term energy storage requires very fast transport of ions and electrons through solids, liquids and interfaces and cost-effective operation at high current densities at harsh conditions (e.g. pH and contaminants). RL1 will design, develop and test new electrodes and membranes for H2 production (RL3), CO2 reduction (RL4) and redox flow batteries (RL5). More specifically, RL1 will investigate in detail mass transport of reactants and charge carrying species at the electrode/membrane-electrolyte interface and associated electrode and membrane degradation mechanisms.
